Today, Norwegian ultra-doom titans ABYSSIC stream the entirety of their highly anticipated second album, "High the Memory", at heavily trafficked web-portal NoCleanSinging.com. Set for international release on February 22nd via Osmose Productions, hear ABYSSIC's High the Memory in its entirety exclusively HERE.

ABYSSIC is a unique symbiosis of atmospheric approaches in funeral death/doom, with black and prog influences. The signature is enhanced by orchestrations with Mellotron, Minimoog, and upright bass.

ABYSSIC is a result of a collaboration between Memnock (Susperia), Elvorn (Susperia), and André Aaslie (Funeral, Images At Twilight, Gromth, Profane Burial), and together with Asgeir Mickelson (ex-Borknagar, Ihsahn), they recorded the debut album "A Winter's Tale" in February 2016 for Osmose Productions.

Later in 2016, Tjodalv (Susperia, ex-Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child) and Makhashanah (AKA Henriette Bordvik - Asagraum [live], ex-Sirenia) joined ABYSSIC, and together with Memnock, Elvorn, and Aaslie, they bring you the ABYSSIC darkness with album #2, "High The Memory".

REVEAL STUDIO LIVE VIDEO RECORDING FOR "SCULPTURES"!

Portuguese Funeral Doom/Death Metal duo by the name of OAK entered Stone Sound Studio in Portugal and made a live recording of a composition called “Sculptures“.

"Sculptures" is the ground shaped by the walk of whom carries the heaviest of burdens. With each step, the feet are buried deeper, being swallowed by the soil. A path that is formed by the passage of a body hollowed out of it's soul, that keeps going through unimaginable pain, never looking back and suffering alone.

OAK are a project of two members from the sensation Portuguese black metal band GAEREA!

“Sculptures” is a musical spellcaster of a high order, one that rises slowly like a haunting mist across a barren plain and then steadily grows in emotional power and intensity. The deep thump and boom of the drums beat like a dying leviathan heart, but the pulse quickens, just as the song’s heart-aching melody becomes more despairing and the vocalist’s grim, cavernous growls become howls of pain.

As the pace subsides again, the mesmerizing guitar reverberations signal the return of a soulful, spectral visitation, eventually joined by a tumbling, rhythmically compulsive drum progression. And then the weight of crushing grief descends like a collapsing mountain — the music becomes staggeringly heavy, and then mounts toward a crescendo of blasting, thundering drums, scything riffs, and ravaging roars.

The intensity crests, and what’s left in its wake are final heartbeats and ghost-lights, echoing and shimmering across that barren plain in the mind’s eye.

Yes indeed, it’s a spellbinding song, but it is still a work in progress. The final version of the song will be included on OAK’s debut album, which is now being recorded in the same Stone Sound Studio in Portugal with sound engineer and producer Ricardo Oliveira (who has worked with Colosso and The Ominous Circle, among others). We’ll be anxiously awaiting its completion.

We’re also happy to report that OAK will be making their first live appearance on March 24th in an ancient chapel in the north of Portugal, with our friends in Bell Witch. Tickets are available HERE.

"Earlier this month we reviewed an impressive new split by two experienced French bands from the black metal underground — NIRNAETH and Azziard. The split, which includes one exclusive song from each band, will be released on August 12 on 7″ vinyl by Kaotoxin Records — the first 7″ ever released by the label. Now we’re following that review with the premiere of a video for NIRNAETH’s powerful track, along with an interview of the band’s guitarist Mutill.

NIRNAETH, who took their name from the word for “Tears” in the elvish language of Sindarin from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, began their existence roughly 15 years ago. Prior to this split, they released two albums, Thrown Athwart the Darkness in 2006 and Splendour of the Abyss in 2009. Their contribution to the split is a track called “Nihil in Me”, and it was was recorded during the pre-production process for a forthcoming third album.



As we learned in the accompanying interview, this new album, like the first two, will tell a story, and “Nihil In Me” is a central part of that narrative — “where the body is regarded as a dam and the blood like a lake frustrated”. In this song, the story’s central character “decides to sabotage the dam in order to leave his body ‘as one leaves a scorched earth'”.

To represent this concept of a body as a dam, the video focuses on tight shots of faces and bodies — which intensifies an already intense performance.

The music itself is a turbocharged assault of gut-punching percussion and fierce riff swarms, with poisonous vocal vitriol. The chaotic torrent of black metal savagery is broken by a head-bobbing, hard-rocking interlude before the hell-ride resumes and rockets toward its conclusion."
