NECRONOMICON conjure epic images of forbidden sights and dark madness with their fourth full-length ‘Rise of the Elder Ones’. The Canadians fuse the relentless onslaught of DEICIDE and SUFFOCATION with the massive dramatic sense of BEHEMOTH and DIMMU BORGIR, while adding a sinister and heavy melodic approach associated with the Stockholm school of death metal into their own crushing sound. ‘Rise of the Elder Ones’ witnesses NECRONOMICON fine-tuning their style to perfection as a new peak in a career that began as early as 1988 with the founding of the band by guitarist and singer Rob "The Witch" Tremblay in the deep northern part of Canadian province Quebec, called the "Fjord of Saguenay". NECRONOMICON always put quality before quantity and accordingly took their time before releasing any material. The first sign of unholy activity was a demo entitled ‘Morbid Ritual’ (1992), which quickly spread through the underground. ‘The Silver Key’ EP (1996) established their fast growing reputation firmly on the national map, before the eagerly awaited debut album ‘Pharaoh of Gods’ (1999) became a modern classic over the years as its eerie amalgamation of brutal dark metal and ambient atmospheres was ahead of its time. Although having taken their name and occult inspiration from the famed literary invention of American master of weird horror fiction H. P. Lovecraft, NECRONOMICON followed up with a tribal concept album ‘The Sacred Medicines’ (2003) based on American Native myth featuring the "Red Bull" singers from Western Canada's Cree Nation on the title track. Having relocated to Montréal and thoroughly conquered their homeland, NECRONOMICON turned their somber attention towards the outside with the first international release ‘Return of the Witch’ (2010). And the world responded with invitations to prestigious festivals such as Inferno (Norway), Ragnarok (Germany), and the Barge to Hell metal cruise among others. The trio also shared stages with well established acts such as CRADLE OF FILTH, DIMMU BORGIR, BEHEMOTH, and MORBID ANGEL, to name but a few. Now NECRONOMICON are about to bring their lurking musical vision into more dangerous and sinister and dimensions than ever.

SAMMATH NAUR - POLAND - DEATH BLACK METAL

Here we are to present and review "Limits were to be broken" the new double CD release from the Polish death black metal masters Sammath Naur! Without a doubt they are one of the most creative and dynamic bands on their genre. This new release unites their two latest albums "Beyond the Limits" [2012] and "Anhedonia" [2011] in a pack full of bonus material, mind-blowing diversity as well as musical extremity, all of this with a very own illuminated death black metal aura. Sammath Naur have upgraded their sound from a technical and yet symphonic / melodic extreme metal into a more complex blackened death metal. Still technical but allot more powerful and in the same time allot more aggressive!
Sadly, and without a doubt this is another damn underrated band, they sure have detach from today's days predictable and monotone extreme metal, the massive work expended on this both last albums prove that they are without a doubt one of the best bands in the genre, all this with a damn killer extreme sound!

The band:
SAMMATH NAUR Polish death black metal masters have unleashed their 2 latest releases in a special 2CD package by the title of "Limits were to be broken", for those unfamiliar with this smashing extreme metal band, let me tell you a bit more about them:
Sammath Naur name for the curious ones, has been adapted from JRR Tolkien's work and means "Chambers of Fire", the only place where the "One Ring" could be destroyed! As for the band itself, it has been formed in 1999 in Poland and till now their only remaining founding member is Sigmar (guitar). Since the foundation the band has developed their sound from a melodic / symphonic death black metal into an allot more technical and dynamic form of extreme metal, combining the best elements of death and black metal and taking them to the limits. With this, the band produces their own sound and own identity, proving to be allot more than just another Polish death black metal band! This has allowed them to tour and participate on loads of concerts and festivals with bands like Hate, Vesania, Crionics, Sceptic, etc.

The new album musically and lyrically:
On "Limits were to be broken" the band presents you two different formulas of the Sammath Naur identity, on the first CD (Beyond the limits) you have the renewed and most updated sound that sure is a more aggressive, technical and dynamic form of blackened death metal, in the other hand on the second CD (Anhedonia) you have their best melodic / symphonic compositions ever built, two faces for the same outstanding band, proving that their will to upgrade and genius to create new sound is the essence of the band, always ready to surprise you with a blasting new opus with renewed and refreshed new elements taken to the limits!
While the "Beyond the limits" sound shall please fans of extremer and more technical bands such as Hate, Decapitated, Behemoth, Morbid Angel, Vader. On the other hand the "Anhedonia" sound shall please the fans of avant-garde and symphonic bands likes Limbonic Art, Arcturus, Vesania, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Fleshgod Apocalypse for example. In both forms the band keeps the demanding and damn top-skill elite technical sound constant, proving that the core of the band is the one who gives their solid identity and sound!
The lyrics on this release mostly done by Sigmar and Maro are mind liberating and against any human blinding religions or beliefs, beliefs that shall make you limited and lesser human! Defying lyricism, always pushing you to think and act by your own self! Damn worth reading, inspired as well as illuminated!
With "Limits were to be broken" Sammath Naur have affirmed themselves as one of the most creative and ever-growing forces deep in the Polish extreme metal scene! With this album the band has set another mark of quality, extremity, technical as well as virtuosity deep into metal music!

The band members and album production:
Just like the title of the album inspires ("Limits were to be broken"), the band members skills and talent are stretched to their limits on this opus!
Sigmar (see also Mala Herba) is the heart and soul of the band, his work (guitar, synth and lyrics) is giving the essence to Sammath Naur identity. Valeo (see also Vesania) work on both last releases is about brilliant, his delightful virtuous guitar leads and orchestrations (Anhedonia) are simply outstanding and genius! Lucass (see also GNIDA, Crionics, Thy Disease, etc.) is already a well known drummer on the Polish extreme metal scene, his dynamism and skills are way above the average allowing him to produce some of the most brilliant, demanding and elite drum work like on his whole album participation! Maro (see also Lost Soul, Mala Herba) has done the best vocal work across this dynamic release. Tas has also contributed with a smashing pounding bass work to this extreme technical album!
Lestath (see also Darzamat, Esqarial, etc) vocals and drums worked pretty well on the bands previous endeavours on a more symphonic / melodic approach, he sure has put the right dose of aggressive vocals to balance things up there! As guest vocals the band invited the well known Polish metal titan Orion (see also Behemoth, Vesania,etc.) who contributed with some vocal lines.
As for the production on both albums we have a great work done and goals achieved. Yet even the recordings done over Yacob Records Studio were damn good, on Invent Sound Studio (Beyond the Limits) the band pushed things further, deep into an absolute new level and reached "the perfect extreme metal elite sound"! I must say that the recordings over there as well as the mix and mastering for both albums done on the famous Hertz Studio (Hate, Vader, Behemoth, etc...) couldn't simply be better!

The album highlights:
Both releases contained on this "Limits were to be broken" piece are quite working as whole and revealing the best of the band but yet I would like to mention some highlights on both of them:
"Beyond the limits": 
Ignited by "Limits Are to Broken" track the new sound of the band is presented at it's best. A damn outstanding and powerful track that welcomes you to a new realm of extreme metal music where limits were made to be broken! The brutally technical sound keeps on invading your ears in tracks like "The Endless Cycle" or "Ecstasy in Pain", pure musical architecture built up by death black metal geniality... damn, those solos by Valeo will surely keep your ears captive! "Grudzień" and "Król-Duch" tracks, the last sung in Polish, reveal a new and powerful formula of dynamic extreme metal crescendo, outstanding how the band unleashes such strength on those tracks! "Harm" is another great track that has given form to a video clip. Two more tracks shall catch your attention, songs like "The Sinister Manifest of Power" and "Beyond the Limits" that ends these Cd with a true epic aura, an extreme music hell unleashed in a tight and complex format, pushing music beyond its limits!
"Anhedonia":
Tracks like "Grand Liberation", "Comedy on Earth" or "The Anhedony Domain" shows the bands essence at that stage to the best, all this with a killer combo of technical melody mixed with outstanding astral symphonic orchestrations, a true delight to the ears. The outstanding solos by Valeo, the avant-garde musical structures and the ever-present orchestral-work for sure push things to a transcendental level! In the other hand tracks like "Let Them Die" or "Eleven XXIII" approach the band to today's days updated sound, allot more aggressive and brutal and lesser dependant of melodic orchestrations, in a a way this tracks are allot more straight forwards and "in-your-face"! One of my favourite tracks here is "Melody of Eleven Lives", it combines at best the most aggressive and symphonic sides of the band at this stage, simply outstanding and delightful. To finish, we have another must-listen cover bonus track, Satyricons "Mother North", simply one of the best Satyricon covers I heard so far, damn brutal!

The Epilog:
In all "Limits were to be broken" as the title inspires, presents the best work ever done by the band Sammath Naur, top skilled musicians creating top quality extreme metal. This is some of the best releases of Polish extreme metal for 2013 year. A release with an elite symphonic death black metal side and a more technical and aggressive death black metal approach on the other! This is a release not to be missed by any death black metal adept with a special taste for Poland products of quality! A black pearl in any extreme metal fan collection and a must have release if you are already a fan of the band, without a doubt this release combines the two best pieces that this band build to the date! All of this wrapped up with two bonus clips ("HARM" and "On the Altar of Mars") as well some smashing artwork build by Piotr Szafraniec (Crionics, Thy Disease,etc). Limits have surely been broken by such innovative excellence in form of extreme metal!
Unleash yourself and expand your horizons, your goals lay beyond the limits on yet unexplored fields, learn to fly and reach a world you thought not to be unreal!

The third and yet the best album of the bands career, without a doubt one of the best metal albums to come out from Portuguese lands. A great technical and progressive piece of extreme metal no doubt! Carlos Cariano and its team have surely achieved a colossal piece on this musical genre! An album for adepts of bands such as Samael, Rotting Christ, Meshuggah, Decapitated, Psycroptic, Morbid Angel, Emperor (latest stage) among many others!
"Antithetical" sure puts Portugal back in the map of Extreme Metal references, a great work from Malevolence, a work that shall ensure everyone that there are allot more quality metal bands in Portugal beside the well known Moonspell, a band that back in time has recruited the services of Malevolence bassist Aires! A must in every technical/progressive death metal fan collection, a venomous work that puts the band where it belongs!

The band:
MALEVOLENCE Portuguese extreme progressive masters have unleashed their third and best album on their careers by the title of "Antithetical".
For those who don't know the band yet, here goes some short description:
The band has been created way back in 1994 by the creative individual mind of Carlos Cariano and are currently in their nineteenth year of existence whilst propelling ahead as a fiercely independent extreme metal act. Since their birth and release, after release, the band has received loads of great critics from the media and fans, the highlight was the 2nd release "Martyrialized" [1999], an album recorded on Fredman Studios (Sweden - Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Arch Enemy, etc.) that allowed the band to establish themselves as one of the best Portuguese metal acts, receiving great critics and sharing stages in and outside Portugal with bands such as Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Marduk, Moonspeel, Avulsed, etc. After several years of absence and with this new release, they will surely be brought back to their rightful place in the Extreme Metal scene!

The new album musically:
With "Antithetical" Malevolence present us a totally new and updated formula, allot more venomous and brutal than on previous works, in all with a total "chainsaw guts-fucked" demented aura. "Antithetical" is a great development from their previous "full-length" album, pushing the band forwards in extreme metal. Malevolence became a band deeply into an allot more demanding form of metal, extreme and fast but yet progressive and technical, with it, pushing the band-members skills and talent to their limits. The finished work sets a mark on Portuguese metal scene as one of the best pieces of the genre to come out from Portuguese lands, proving that there are allot more quality extreme metal bands from Lusitanian lands beside the well known Moonspell!
"Antithetical" is an album that shall please the fans of bands like Samael, Rotting Christ, Meshuggah, Decapitated, Psycroptic, Morbid Angel, Emperor (latest stage) among many others!
The new work is a sophisticated, complex, psycho corrosive and technically progressive metal experience. An ambitious third release, aiming to make a stand and set a mark into today's days Metal music. It's hard to label the new sound of Malevolence so better enjoy it's technical, modern, avant-garde, rebel structures, all of this in a truly demanding piece of metal art!
 
The band members and album production:
On "Antithetical" every band-member is pushed to it's limits, Carlos Cariano, the bands mentor long been architecting this outstanding as well as complex metal piece, his guitar and vocal work are at top of what has been done on the field, the pounding bass lines by Aires Pereira (also on Moonspell) prove that he is among the best Portuguese bass players, the Keyboard / Programming by Paulo Pereira as well as the additional guitar work by Fred Noel are a perfect fit into "Antithetical" demands. Last but not least, no one better than Dirk Verbeuren (Soilwork, The Devin Townsend Project, Warrel Dane,...) to fullfill the dynamicly demanding drum work, without a doubt this album adds another tight and brilliant performance to his outstanding drumers career!
The production, mix and mastering of this work are another highlight, another great work done by V. Santura (Tryptykon, Obscura, Dark Fortress, Pestilence,...) in Landshut, Germany at Woodhouse Studio between the 14th and 23rd of March 2012. Honestly the sound couldn't get much better than it is, a perfect match to the demanding sound that the album sure requires, elite extreme metal sound!

The album highlights:
"Antithetical" is a pretty organic and dynamic album where it's hard to pick up tracks that will detach allot from each other, yet I must say that the tracks that sure reveal Malevolence in their best shape are tracks like the first one by the title of "Slithering", a brutally powerful track to best introduce you to this album wicked experience, quickly followed by the "Cult of the Everlasting" an epic nonconformist yet melodic track that keeps the intoxicating brutal identity of the band at it's best. Another track that will work out your entrails with a chainsaw is "Devoured Unlimited", a damn strong track that shall pierce your ears with such decadent malevolence. The title track "Antithetical" is probably the best tracks of the album, an apocalyptic hybrid track, with a very own identity, a damn epic progressive and technical song, taking the album concept to it's limits! "Exocortex Momentum" is another great ear-catching track, within it a great classic guitar solo is unveiled, a pure moment of clarity in this mind corrosive album so full of contrasts and mind-blowing musical structures!

The Epilog:
In all "Antithetical" as yet the name inspires, presents itself as an album that makes a stand against the common/usual musical banality! This rebel dynamism as well as brutal demanding sound sure prove that Malevolence have set a mark and stand tall on extreme metal grounds, proving that elite extreme metal is also being played over Portuguese lands, all of this, with the best quality venomous sound and top-skilled musicians!
A must-have album for adepts of extreme and progressive metal! One of the most ambitious releases to come out from Lusitanian lands as well as one of the hardest to categorize! A huge step forwards that may put Malevolence on their rightful belonging place as a cult band in extreme metal universe!
The album artwork by KKStructures sure adds a perfect match identity and design to all "Antithetical" conceptual ideals!
Mankind sinks into human ambiguous values, slowly we all crawl into the abyss of a hollow existence, life becomes nothing more than a slithering passage, fake, monochromatic.... slave or Master it's your choice! Make your stand, mark your position and raise your values to reach out for your own life's meaning!

For those yet unfamiliar with these crazy critters from Vila Real - Portugal ,Serrabulho are an absolutely wicked happy death / grindcore band, one of our Portuguese finest examples on this genre, counting with ToKa (ex-Holocausto Canibal) on the vocals. You sure couldn't pick anyone better to raise such top-quality band on Portuguese lands!
They play fast grindcore aiming for some good laughs, a natural-born party band for adepts of bands such as Gut, Jig-Ai, Gronibard, Haemorrhage, Rumpeprop, Lividity, among many others! A must-check band for party-animals with a total perverted taste for fast music and riffs that will hook you up to every jolly wicked song!
Since their founding year in 2010 they have impressed with their crazy live performances, leaving no one indifferent to their music and attitude, even people who aren't so much into grindcore at all. The energy and the comic behaviour renewed in every new show sure brings everybody into Serrabulho party shows! It's impossible to be dull and bored on their concerts!

The new album musically:
"Ass Troubles" is impressively the debut release of Serrabulho Portuguese party grinders. With this album they seem to have been years on the field and grinding their asses up since ages ago, the frenetic energy, the know-how, all this mature sound with a very "old-kid" party attitude proves that Serrabulho are an obligatory band on every show where you wish to amuse the audience, combining local "Pimba music" (Portuguese danceable romantic naughty music) and cartoons tunes, all this with the add of the most extreme fast death / grindcore.
It's impossible to be indifferent to Serrabulho music, Grinder or not, you will enjoy this good-mood making release. "Ass Troubles" is fast, happy, catchy and will surely make you listen to it on and on, singing along with the songs! If that aren't enough reasons to get this release, then the wicked lyrics, perverted cover art by Marta Peneda and naughty song titles in many bad-languages make a perfect fit and wrap-up to the bands concept!

The band members and album production:
Serrabulho work pretty much as a whole, the front-man ToKa is a damn well known Grinder in the Portuguese scene, former Holocausto Canibal singer who's very dear to our legion of metal fans, his experience and natural party-animal behaviour sure captivates every metal-head attention, his growls, grunts and squeaks together with Paulo's high tone vocals sure work awesome on this release. Paulo's riff hooks, and demented guitar work sure give all the right dose of aggression to this release, all this with the great pounding bass of Guilhermino and the brutal drum work by Ivan.
The production that was done by the bass player Guilhermino Martins and Serrabulho, at Blind & Lost Studios (Stª Marta de Penaguião, Portugal) is just about perfect to present the band at it's best on it's debut, a smashing work of death / gindcore!

The album track highlights:
Grindcore albums where meant to be short and intense, Serrabulho sure take this literally on their debut, from the starting track "Atomic Fart" to the last "I'm full of this shit" the band unleashes some "in-your-face" grindcore with some nice death metal vibe into, all this with the add of damn funny intros to the songs. Tracks like "Atomic Fart", "Disgusting Piece of Shit", "Lèche Moi les Couilles", "Pubic Hair in the Glasses" and "Toco Loco du Moi" will get stuck into your hears, like they sure did to mine, cool and addicting songs on this grindcore comic madness!

The Epilog:
In all this smashing, yet short debut release from Portuguese party grinders Serrabulho is a must-have release to any grindcore fans and not only, it's an addicting album that will get you into a real good mood! "Ass Troubles" will bring out the "naughty-child" side from you! No wonder one of the bands influences is the absolutely bad-tasted n' hilarious disgusting cartoons Ren & Stimpy! There is still allot to expect on future albums of the band, allot more to come and develop, but for now prepare yourself for some real ass troubles Serrabulho style, without a doubt one of the best Portuguese grindcore releases out to the date, I am sure you will laugh your ass out with this piece of happy death / grindcore... and probably get some ass troubles afterwards!!!

The band:
BLACK ALTAR Polish black metal titans have unleashed their second release in 2013, this mini-CD goes by the title of "Suicidal Salvation" and it was intended to be a split cd with the Swedish black metal legends Shinning.
For all those unfamiliar with Black Altar, I can tell you that they've been born in a blasphemous Sabbath in the Night of Walpurgia Anno Bastardi 1996 by the hand of the dark lord Shadow, their only remaining and founding member. Since those times that the band has been rising with unholy strength to set a mark on Polish black metal scene, yet within the years, the band became a true legend on what they do.
Always true to the underground black metal movement, they've been raising fans all across all this vast metal universe! This unholy crusade by the Black Altar guardian Shadow has given the band allot of respect on this strict musical genre.

The new album musicaly:
With their upgraded brutal and very own terrorizing black metal sound, Black Altar have reached a new level with "Suicidal Salvation" a great step forwards from "Death Fanaticist" (latest full length album) who got tons of great reviews, yet with this new piece of the band is making fans anxious for the next full-length album to come!
"Suicidal Salvation" presents a renewed Black Altar sound, unleashing the same formula that given them their own identity but this time with the add of a darker brutal sound. Never before they have been closer to death metal fierceness, this aspect will probably please the fans of a more aggressive approach to black metal. A sound that shall please fans of band like Belphegor, Marduk, Necrophobic, Watain, Tjuder, Immortal, Dark Funeral and more!
This conjured diabolical destructive sound shall feast the tortured souls appetite for a rough, yet brutal black metal sound. Still dirty and unclean but more powerful and destructive than ever before!

The lyrics and concept of the album:
"Suicidal Salvation" main concept deals with ending up your own life and entering the world beyond life itself as yet the great cover art by Babalon Graphics reflects. A journey where life and death are just in a distance of an act of self-offering. Black Altar takes your possessed soul deep into the lands of the dead, a realm so close to us all in a ritual suicide distance away. Within this release you will receive a glimpse of how it shall be, this world beyond life... and death!

The band members and album production:
On Black Altar's terror scenario Shadow is the voice of horror in such frostbitten dark brutal blaspheme atmosphere! The work of Horizon on the tortured guitars and Horn of the Antichrist on drums sure bring Black Altar to a new level of intensity and dark brutality! The blackened rough production on BAT studio by Marek Heimburger sure catches the right sound for this album, forget about a crystal clean sound, this sound was meant to be dark and ugly, yet with due definition so that the details won't be washed away with the abusive uncleanness! Think that this albums underground black metal sound couldn't be much better than it is!

The album track-by-track:
The mini-CD works as whole, from the coldly dark piano intro on "The Sentence", a brutally dark track where Black Altar unleashes their horror identity on it's highest levels, followed by the title track "Suicidal Salvation" ignited by the blackest flames of hell, here the bright use of hollow keyboards sure add some melody to the darkest brutal sound.
Time to go deeper and darker than black with the instrumental "Journey to the Astral Realm ", a trip into the darkest catacombs of hellish phantasmagoria, an unholy portrait of darkest musical art. "Pulse ov the Universe" brings forth Black Altar with their traditional terrorizing black metal sound, unclean and unholy as it can be. This album ends up with one of the most addicting tracks that the band has created so far, it goes by the suggestive title of "666 Mega Beast", addicting and so damn brutal, it was made to haunt your tortured ears for a long, long time!! "666 Mega Beast" the mighty devilish beast of the night!

The Epilog:
In all "Suicidal Salvation" MCD is a great black metal piece for adepts of deeply dark, sinister and unholy brutal black metal, as obscure as it can be! A must-have piece of horror in the darkest form of metal art! Blackest anthems of destruction and spine chilling atmospheres take this album to the best material being done in the genre. Death awaits us all, it's up to us how we both meet in the end, if by our own hand or by the hands of others. Lead your life and make your own destiny... then you will conquer death herself!!
