No one combines death and black metal quite like Poland’s HATE. With unflinching viciousness and a sense of atmosphere unique to the band, on Rugia, their twelfth full-length, they push the boundaries of their craft even further. “It was clear to me that it should build upon and evolve from our previous record, ‘Auric Gates Of Veles’ (2019), both musically and lyrically. However, every Hate record stands as a separate journey, and never twice to the same place. You never know exactly where it will lead you,” states vocalist/guitarist ATF Sinner, who has led the band since 1991. Fresh blood in the band’s line-up also helped contribute to Rugia‘s unique sound. Pavulon (drums), who had played with the band since 2014, was forced to step down from the band due to serious health issues. The band tapped Nar-Sil (Neolith, Virgin Snatch, Embrional) to take his place. “Working with a new drummer this time around was a fascinating experience for me. Nar-Sil’s technique and presence are quite different from Pavulon’s, and that definitely comes across. I believe we managed to construct a refreshing new chapter to our discography, composing nine truly sinister onslaughts of pure rage.”

The band elected to once again track the album in the Hertz Recording Studio in Poland, and it was recorded, mixed and mastered by the Wiesłaski Brothers (Behemoth, Decapitated). Everything was laid down over about two to three weeks, with longtime collaborator Michał Staczkun providing the ambient elements of the band’s sound. The only struggle came about at the mixing stage, where the final character of the record emerges. “Here we encountered many problems, contradictory visions too. The producers had their own idea for the overall sound, which differed from what I had in mind, so we were trying to find a good compromise and it took us a few months.” Given how strongly the personality of the record shines through, it is safe to say that the compromise reached was definitely in its best interest, standing as perhaps the best sounding record in the band’s long career. Hate is also celebrating thirty years of activity with Rugia, Sinner affirming he is as driven as ever. “Well, the fire is still burning! I’m proud that I have built a band with such strong energy, that’s lasted for a long time in spite of numerous line-up changes and obstacles in our way. We are still here and we create with ever growing consciousness and dedication. The energy speaks through us. Honestly, I think of the band as something much bigger and more profound than the individual people involved in it over any given period of time. I believe we create a channel for energies that surpass us.”

Writing for Rugia commenced shortly after Auric Gates of Veles was released. However, Hate soon began to tour extensively in support of their then new opus, and the production of new music was put on the back burner. But come 2020 and the COVID pandemic, the band's touring plans with Belphegor and Suffocation were abruptly cut short. With this unexpected infusion of free time, the band decided to buckle down and finish writing the material they were working on.

Sinner and Nar-Sil were joined by Domin on lead guitar and Tiermes on bass, who played with the band live since 2018, to complete the lineup. "Although I wrote the riffs, main arrangements and lyrics, we all worked on what you hear on Rugia. We put the pieces together and re-arranged fragments as a team. Our albums are always a collective effort and Rugia was no different," asserts Sinner. Sound-wise, they were mainly inspired by nineties extreme metal, both black and death, and they wanted to keep their sound as organic as possible. Warts and all. "It sounds quite harsh, very dynamic and unrestrained. It also has a strong ambient element to it that emphasizes the material's tone and dark atmosphere. The rhythm section is more death metal influenced this time around, which harkens back to our roots. You could say that most of the songs on this album are 'pagan death metal' - a combination of epic riffs and ferocious blasting rhythms." One thing that might come as a surprise to fans is the manner in which Sinner uses his voice, which is a lot more sophisticated than on previous records. "I tried to make my voice sound at three different timbres, or even different people behind the microphone. Sometimes the voices are combined together, sometimes they are more like separate vocal lines. I wanted to build this enriched narrative, and at our shows, I think Tiermes will help me with some of the vocal lines to bring that effect to a live surrounding."

Lyrically, the album sees the band continue to delve into the depths of Slavonic mysticism. "Generally, all the songs on the album are dedicated to the ancient Slavic world - great migrations, wars, battles, and the struggle for survival. But there is also a philosophical level to it, which is very important. Slavic mythology is a collection of universal stories touching upon fundamental issues that we all encounter in our lives. Therefore it is a frame that allows me to write about contemporary problems that I encounter myself from a different perspective. Along the way, I discovered my pagan soul and I encourage people to do the same. I think everybody has this deeper, more profound identity based on understanding our unity with nature, something that goes beyond all the civilizations we have built." The album title is taken from the archaic name of a German island on the Baltic Sea now called Rügen. In ancient times, Rügen or Rugia, was a site of holy pilgrimage to the pagan Slavic people. It was the very heart of the western Slavic faith, housing the fabled stronghold of Arkona. The album is at its core a tribute to Rugia and its tribes and the culture they created.

Since 1991, HATE have lived up to their name, responsible for some of the angriest and most ruthless death metal unleashed upon the world. With 2017's Tremendum, they took a step toward a darker, more atmospheric, black metal-oriented style and began exploring Slavonic mysticism, and new album "Auric Gates Of Veles" boldly continues in that direction.

"We wanted to go deeper into the subject, both musically and lyrically," asserts vocalist/guitarist ATF Sinner. "We also wanted to record a sharper and better defined rhythm section, a more death metal-oriented one. When it comes to guitar sound, it was meant to be a wall of sonic destruction with dark ambient elements in the background." To say that they achieved that which they set out to create is an understatement, for "Auric Gates Of Veles" is a titanic record that is both more organic and dynamic sounding, and may well be the finest of their storied career.

HATE BIOGRAPHY

THE STORY

Hate has consistently been one of the top billed bands stemming from the powerful Polish Extreme Metal movement. But Hate's story from their very early days has never been a simple one. From the early days of Daemon Qui Fecit Terram and Lord Is Avenger, the journey has been to digest the world around and attempt to break bread with a reality wherein there are no restrictions. Where there is no ground to keep you grounded and no church to keep you unthinking and busy. The first two albums, joined by the third, Cain’s Way, carried the band through the 90's, wherein they made a name for themselves both in the national underground and abroad.

Releasing their fourth record, Awakening The Liar, in league with the fabled French record label, Listenable Records, was an important milestone in more ways than one. It showed Hate's character as a band in the sense that it was a very different affair from all three records that came before it. Cleaner perhaps, but also sharper, more dexterous, the band adapted over time to their own developing sensibilities and marked a clean-cut distinction. Hate wasn't, isn't, and won't be, a band afraid to take their sound to a new place. To explore new ideas.

This notion was further cemented with the release of Anaclasis: A Haunting Gospel of Malice and Hatred. A powerful testament to a different period in the band's journey, this 13 years old record is still held by many as one of the classics of the second era of Hate. This era was marked with versatility and a rise in prominence that has not halted to this day. It was here that the band began to reap the fruits of their international popularity. Hate was now unleashed upon the pond of the world. Their 6th and 7th releases, Morphosis and Erebos respectively, saw them touring the USA with such giants as Sepultura and Mayhem, as well as touring Europe and South America with Rotting Christ, Vader, Hypocrisy and many others.

These happenings soon culminated with Hate's signing to the Austrian label and Metal powerhouse, Napalm Records. Soon thereafter, Hate released their first opus in this new environment in the form of Solarflesh: A Gospel of Radiant Divinity. Solarflesh was everything a fan of the band could have wanted and more. The record showed not only aggressive and abrasive music, but music that managed to fully engulf the ideas behind the songs. The silent choking of hopelessness, the majesty of death and catharsis combined into an understanding of the void.

But tragedy struck the band seemingly out of nowhere, and this ascension was brought into a very painful halt. The band's bassist of five years, Sławomir "Mortifer" Archangielskij, passed away in his sleep on April 6th 2013, only four days before what would have been his 28th birthday. The band was distraught, not only have they lost an important component, but also a great friend who's shadow and spirit still lives on in the band to this very day. A few months later, joined by current drummer, Paweł "Pavulon" Jaroszewicz (Vader, Decapitated, Antigama, guest work in Lamb of God, among many others), Hate released their grief into music, and spawned the album Crusade: Zero. The album offered an interesting, at times beautiful, at times saddening, view into the madness which is dealing with the death of a young, close friend. And out of death, came life, and with the leaving of Konrad "Destroyer" Ramotowski (guitars), the second era of Hate was sealed, but the third has come to be.

Tremendum was released on the 5th of May, 2017, and it was, again, a game changer. Since 1991, HATE have lived up to their name, responsible for some of the angriest and most ruthless death metal unleashed upon the world. THE STORY

Hate has consistently been one of the top billed bands stemming from the powerful Polish Extreme Metal movement. But Hate's story from their very early days has never been a simple one. The first two albums, joined by the third, Cain’s Way, carried the band through the 90's, wherein they made a name for themselves both in the national underground and abroad.

Releasing their fourth record, Awakening The Liar, in league with the fabled French record label, Listenable Records, was an important milestone in more ways than one. It showed Hate's character as a band in the sense that it was a very different affair from all three records that came before it. Cleaner perhaps, but also sharper, more dexterous, the band adapted over time to their own developing sensibilities and marked a clean-cut distinction. Hate wasn't, isn't, and won't be, a band afraid to take their sound to a new place. To explore new ideas.

This notion was further cemented with the release of Anaclasis: A Haunting Gospel of Malice and Hatred. A powerful testament to a different period in the band's journey, this 13 years old record is still held by many as one of the classics of the second era of Hate. This era was marked with versatility and a rise in prominence that has not halted to this day. It was here that the band began to reap the fruits of their international popularity. Hate was now unleashed upon the pond of the world. Their 6th and 7th releases, Morphosis and Erebos respectively, saw them touring the USA with such giants as Sepultura and Mayhem, as well as touring Europe and South America with Rotting Christ, Vader, Hypocrisy and many others.

These happenings soon culminated with Hate's signing to the Austrian label and Metal powerhouse, Napalm Records. Soon thereafter, Hate released their first opus in this new environment in the form of Solarflesh: A Gospel of Radiant Divinity. Solarflesh was everything a fan of the band could have wanted and more. The record showed not only aggressive and abrasive music, but music that managed to fully engulf the ideas behind the songs. The silent choking of hopelessness, the majesty of death and catharsis combined into an understanding of the void.

But tragedy struck the band seemingly out of nowhere, and this ascension was brought into a very painful halt. The band's bassist of five years, Sławomir "Mortifer" Archangielskij, passed away in his sleep on April 6th 2013, only four days before what would have been his 28th birthday. The band was distraught, not only have they lost an important component, but also a great friend who's shadow and spirit still lives on in the band to this very day. A few months later, joined by current drummer, Paweł "Pavulon" Jaroszewicz (Vader, Decapitated, Antigama, guest work in Lamb of God, among many others), Hate released their grief into music, and spawned the album Crusade: Zero. The album offered an interesting, at times beautiful, at times saddening, view into the madness which is dealing with the death of a young, close friend. And out of death, came life, and with the leaving of Konrad "Destroyer" Ramotowski (guitars), the second era of Hate was sealed, but the third has come to be.

Since 1991, HATE have lived up to their name, responsible for some of the angriest and most ruthless death metal unleashed upon the world. With 2017's Tremendum, they took a step toward a darker, more atmospheric, black metal-oriented style and began exploring Slavonic mysticism, and new album "Auric Gates Of Veles" boldly continues in that direction.

"We wanted to go deeper into the subject, both musically and lyrically," asserts vocalist/guitarist ATF Sinner. "We also wanted to record a sharper and better defined rhythm section, a more death metal-oriented one. When it comes to guitar sound, it was meant to be a wall of sonic destruction with dark ambient elements in the background." To say that they achieved that which they set out to create is an understatement, for "Auric Gates Of Veles" is a titanic record that is both more organic and dynamic sounding, and may well be the finest of their storied career.

HATE BIOGRAPHY

THE STORY

Hate has consistently been one of the top billed bands stemming from the powerful Polish Extreme Metal movement. But Hate's story from their very early days has never been a simple one. From the early days of Daemon Qui Fecit Terram and Lord Is Avenger, the journey has been to digest the world around and attempt to break bread with a reality wherein there are no restrictions. Where there is no ground to keep you grounded and no church to keep you unthinking and busy. The first two albums, joined by the third, Cain’s Way, carried the band through the 90's, wherein they made a name for themselves both in the national underground and abroad.

Releasing their fourth record, Awakening The Liar, in league with the fabled French record label, Listenable Records, was an important milestone in more ways than one. It showed Hate's character as a band in the sense that it was a very different affair from all three records that came before it. Cleaner perhaps, but also sharper, more dexterous, the band adapted over time to their own developing sensibilities and marked a clean-cut distinction. Hate wasn't, isn't, and won't be, a band afraid to take their sound to a new place. To explore new ideas.

This notion was further cemented with the release of Anaclasis: A Haunting Gospel of Malice and Hatred. A powerful testament to a different period in the band's journey, this 13 years old record is still held by many as one of the classics of the second era of Hate. This era was marked with versatility and a rise in prominence that has not halted to this day. It was here that the band began to reap the fruits of their international popularity. Hate was now unleashed upon the pond of the world. Their 6th and 7th releases, Morphosis and Erebos respectively, saw them touring the USA with such giants as Sepultura and Mayhem, as well as touring Europe and South America with Rotting Christ, Vader, Hypocrisy and many others.

These happenings soon culminated with Hate's signing to the Austrian label and Metal powerhouse, Napalm Records. Soon thereafter, Hate released their first opus in this new environment in the form of Solarflesh: A Gospel of Radiant Divinity. Solarflesh was everything a fan of the band could have wanted and more. The record showed not only aggressive and abrasive music, but music that managed to fully engulf the ideas behind the songs. The silent choking of hopelessness, the majesty of death and catharsis combined into an understanding of the void.

But tragedy struck the band seemingly out of nowhere, and this ascension was brought into a very painful halt. The band's bassist of five years, Sławomir "Mortifer" Archangielskij, passed away in his sleep on April 6th 2013, only four days before what would have been his 28th birthday. The band was distraught, not only have they lost an important component, but also a great friend who's shadow and spirit still lives on in the band to this very day. A few months later, joined by current drummer, Paweł "Pavulon" Jaroszewicz (Vader, Decapitated, Antigama, guest work in Lamb of God, among many others), Hate released their grief into music, and spawned the album Crusade: Zero. The album offered an interesting, at times beautiful, at times saddening, view into the madness which is dealing with the death of a young, close friend. And out of death, came life, and with the leaving of Konrad "Destroyer" Ramotowski (guitars), the second era of Hate was sealed, but the third has come to be.

Tremendum was released on the 5th of May, 2017, and it was, again, a game changer. The album saw ATF Sinner (vocals, guitars) utilise the dark aspects of the mystic and arcane Slavonic folklore to explore themes both personal and impersonal. It is an album that is relatable at first listen, but that is hard to fully know. Reviewers and fans alike praised Tremendum for not only demonstrating that Hate know exactly how to create lacerating and dark music, but that the album does justice to topics and themes not normally drawn upon in the realm of Death Metal.

With Tremendum, ATF Sinner looked both inwards and outwards to create a piece that not only resonated with his own background, but that sought to further unearth what lies in the pages of Slavonic Pagan lore. He drew upon the works of such scholars as Czesław Białczynski, among others, to try and piece together a coherent understanding rather than a coherent narrative. Less so about who did what and why, but more about how to see and process through pagan eyes. How to interpret the world around him, essence and stone, through the eyes of an ancient culture that laid the foundation to so much of the Eastern European character. If one were to lift the veil of Christianity, Catholicism and the Eastern Orthodoxy.

In 2018, we find Hate as ever, advancing. In preparation for what might be their most fruitful endeavour so far, Hate has chosen to collaborate with the home of American Metal, Metal Blade Records. Toe to toe with such legendary acts as Behemoth, Mercyful Fate, and Amon Amarth, Hate is seeking to cement itself in the stomping grounds of giants. Having released snippets of what's to come with the "Path to Arkhen" demo-track and a preview of “In The Shrine Of Veles,” it can be said with some certainty that Hate isn't a household name just in Poland, but an important part of the framework of global Extreme Metal. Work on the upcoming album - slated for a 2019 release - is well underway, with more details coming soon.
